Katie Corning, Ft. Myers, Florida created "Love Is Just A Box Of Chocolates." Katie is sponsored by Angel. An opened heart shape Valentine box with faces on each piece of chocolate candy. One chocolate face is melted, one is broken open & laying upside down, one face slid right off the the candy. Some faces are happy, some are a little silly...
So...with love...you just never know what you are going to get.

John Gowdy, who flew to SandFest from Italy, was sponsored by the area Episcopal Churchs and the Mustang Island Conference Center.

John sculpted "He Lives" (Pieta) with
Mary holding Jesus after being taken down from the cross. There was a huge cross lying on the ground. It was a very powerful dramatic sculpture.

This sculpture won People's Choice in the Master's Solo Division.

Jeff Strong from Tecoma, Washington, sculpts for the Dunes Condominium.

Jeff's sculpture is "Fire, Water, Earth, & Air." The sculpture has a big wave going over flames of fire. In the center, Jeff carved out a large cut-thru between the wave and fire. Cut-thrus increase the chances of a collapse but make the piece more technically difficult which is what the judges look for.

Carl Jara, from Lyndhurst,, Ohio, created this beautiful woman blooming from a flower. Carl is sponsored by Gulf Shores.

This tribute to spring seems to almost come alive.

Suzanne Altamare, Daytona Beach, Florida, created "In Our Hands" which shows animals safely held within a pair of strong hands. The sculpture symbolizes the ARK, our Animal Rehabilitation Keep, run by Tony Amos.

Thomas is sponsored by Pletz Construction, in San Antonio, Texas.

It depicts a surfer riding the waves but a closer look reveals that he is in the tub and the chain and stopper have been pulled. He is headed down the drain. This piece is called "Drain Pipe."
Koet's sculpture won Third Place in the Master's Solo Division.

This sculpture also won the "Coveted Befress Award" in the Master's Solo Division. (Meaning that this sculptor raised the most money for SandFest)

Fred Mallett, sponsored by the Port Medical Center, created a personally meaningful piece reflecting the bereavement he has been going through, called "Public Face, Private Face." Fred sculpted a faceless human figure that held many different faces. Sadly, Fred lost his mother a few weeks ago to cancer and knows too well the different stages (faces) of grieving.

"How To Fit A Square Peg Into A Round Hole"

Vern Cooley, from Seattle, Washington, created this fun piece for La Playa Mexican Grille.

Barry Swires, Kelso, Washington, sculpted "Beach Fun." Barry's sponsor was Cinnamon Shore.
A woman life guard watching out over the beach as a young boy with a dog builds a sand castle. A sand crab is crawling out of the sand to get the dog. A man has fallen asleep on the beach & someone has put a mound of sand on him to make him look like a mermaid. There is a beach umbrella (with the distinctive "Cinnamon Shore" classic stripes) with someone's feet sticking out from under the umbrella.

Guy Beauregard, from Quebec, Canada, sculpted "Warriors Of Love" and was sponsored by the Port "A" Pizzeria. A 12 foot tall totem pole-like sculpture with many smiling faces and hearts. Very tall and lots of cut-thrus which make the piece technically difficult and impressed the judges. Everywhere you look, there are faces and hearts of some sort.

These photos show the different stages. The first photo shows 5 sets of wooden forms stacked on top of each other, each one is progressively smaller. Each wooden form is two feet high so you can see that he already has 10 foot of height and he will stack some sand on the very top for even more height. Guy started with the largest form at the bottom and filled it with sand and water and tamping the sand firm, then placing the next form on top and so on. This phase is called the "pound-up" and usually takes an entire day. In the second photo, you can see that he removed the top form and carved that sand. He will work from the top down, removing another form till he gets to the bottom.
